The race to develop the next groundbreaking large language model is heating up, and now a Chinese contender has reportedly secured a significant amount of funding to push ahead in this race.
Moonshot AI, an artificial intelligence startup established less than a year ago, focuses on building LLMs capable of handling lengthy text and data inputs. According to reports, Moonshot AI has raised over $1 billion in a Series B funding round, valuing the company at $2.5 billion, making it the largest funding round for Chinese LLM developers on public record.
The startup, known as YueZhiAnMian in China, has been focusing on the development of Large Language Models, specifically in processing long-form context and response, a challenging area in the AI field.
Moonshot made headlines last year with the launch of a 100 billion-parameter LLM, followed by the release of its first chatbot, Kimi, capable of supporting the processing of 200,000 Chinese characters in a single conversation.
We have reached out to Yang Zhilin, the organizer of Moonshot, for comment and will update this post accordingly.
Reports suggest that investors including Alibaba and HongShan have contributed to Moonshot’s funding, alongside other notable strategic partners. In a previous funding round, Moonshot raised $200 million valuing it at $300 million.
Yang, Moonshot’s founder, holds a computer science PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and has a history of working with prominent tech companies. He was also a key author of Transformer-XL, which has played a significant role in Moonshot’s mission.
Moonshot’s focus on processing long context and producing more accurate results for queries sets the stage for the company to target text-based use cases such as legal documents, fiction writing, and financial analysis.
