Andrew Kannan launched the Satisfaction 75 right before the mechanical keyboard hobby exploded during the pandemic while still working as an engineer at Klaviyo. The Satisfaction 75 has become a classic since its initial run of 200 units sold out. Kannan later co-founded CannonKeys with his wife, Ana Cala Oliveira, expanding the company into a full-scale custom mechanical keyboard shop. They have launched several successful keyboard designs of their own.
CannonKeys is now introducing the Sat75 X, a modernized version of the original Satisfaction 75 with added features like a hot-swap PCB, gasket mount, pre-soldered knob, all housed in an injection-molded polycarbonate body. The board comes in three color options: cloud white, octo purple, and stratus gray, with a small LCD screen featuring Bongo Cat and a words-per-minute counter.
Priced at $111, Sat75 X provides an affordable entry point into custom mechanical keyboards. CannonKeys offers a full set including PBT keycaps and an 80-pack of linear or tactile switches for $150. Preorders are expected to ship in early 2025.
Kannan shared that the origins of CannonKeys started as a passion project that grew into a full-fledged business. The company transitioned from operating out of their apartment to a small warehouse, hiring employees along the way.
With Sat75 X, CannonKeys aims to cater to a changing market, offering an affordable option for custom mechanical keyboards under $150. Kannan emphasized the importance of creating unique and resonant products in today’s competitive landscape.
The Sat75 X offers customization options with additional components like plate foam, silicone plate, silicone dampener, and plans for FR4, aluminum, and clear PC plates and gaskets. While lacking wireless capability and LED lighting, the board is praised for its lightweight and pleasant typing experience.
Building the Sat75 X provides a fun and satisfying DIY experience in a world with limited opportunities for personal customization. Despite some trade-offs, the process of assembling a custom mechanical keyboard is rewarding and enjoyable.
