Instagram has recently introduced a hidden emoji game that can be accessed within your DMs. The objective of the game is simple: use your finger to control the paddle at the bottom of the screen to keep your emoji bouncing and prevent it from dropping. If the emoji falls, the game is over. The gameplay is reminiscent of classic pre-installed phone games like Breakout or Pong.
To uncover the secretive game, simply open a DM chat, send an emoji, and then tap on it. This action will transport you to a yellow screen featuring a paddle and your chosen emoji. As you progress in the game, the emoji will move faster and the background color will darken.

After testing, it was discovered that any emoji can be used, but only sending a single emoji will activate the game. The game saves your highest score, allowing you to return at any time and attempt to surpass your previous record. Your high score is retained across all your DMs, eliminating the need to revisit the initial emoji used to trigger the game. Additionally, the game can be initiated by clicking on an emoji sent by someone else in a DM.
It’s important to note that the recipient in the conversation will not be aware of the game activity, so providing context for sending a random emoji may be wise.
While the game is compatible with both iOS and Android, access is not universal. In testing, some users at TechCrunch had access to the game, while others did not.
An Instagram spokesperson informed TechCrunch via email that the company is continuously exploring new ways to enhance the fun aspect of Instagram, which led to the introduction of the game. However, specifics regarding its availability were not disclosed.
