The year 2023 witnessed a breakthrough from Boox with the introduction of Palma. This innovative device merged the functionalities of e-readers and smartphones by combining e-paper technology with Android. Initially, it was marketed as a compact Kindle-like device that could easily fit into a pocket.
The idea of a portable e-reader resonates with many individuals who have experienced the inconvenience of carrying a larger device around. As someone who has struggled to manage a Kindle on public transport, the concept of a pocketable e-reader seems highly appealing.
Beyond its portability, Boox has grander visions for the Palma line. The upcoming Palma 2 is dubbed as “Mobile ePaper for a Mindful Lifestyle,” indicating a shift towards a productivity-focused device with minimal distractions. Despite the marketing jargon, Boox seems dedicated to promoting a device that enhances focus and efficiency.
This mindful work device boasts a 6.13-inch 300 PPI E Ink display, 6GB of RAM, and 12GB of storage. Powered by a new octa-core processor, it also features a fingerprint reader for enhanced security. With access to Google’s Play Store, the Android device blurs the boundaries between an e-reader and a smartphone. Additionally, it includes dual speakers and a 16-megapixel camera optimized for document scanning.
The Palma 2 is currently available for pre-order at $280, positioning it within the price range of traditional e-readers.
