Blizzard has recently announced that BlizzCon 2024 will not be taking place. This decision was made after careful consideration and was not taken lightly. Instead of hosting BlizzCon, Blizzard will be exploring different formats and making announcements at other shows, such as Gamescom in August.
In a press release, Blizzard confirmed that events like the Overwatch Champions Series in Dallas and Stockholm, as well as the thirtieth anniversary of Warcraft games, will not be affected by this change.
BlizzCon Cancelled
BlizzCon first started in 2005 at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. Over the years, it has become a prominent event in the gaming industry, featuring big-budget showcases with live performances, game reveals, and cosplay contests.
This is not the first time BlizzCon has been cancelled, it’s actually the fifth time. The last cancellations were in 2020 due to COVID-19 and in 2022 because of legal issues. Despite this, BlizzCon has remained popular but has also become increasingly expensive, with tickets costing $299 last year.
Blizzard provided the following statement regarding the cancellation of BlizzCon 2024:
‘After careful consideration over the last year, we at Blizzard have made the decision not to hold BlizzCon in 2024. This decision was not made lightly as BlizzCon remains a very special event for all of us, and we know many of you look forward to it. While we’re approaching this year differently and as we have explored different event formats in the past, rest assured that we are just as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in future years.’
So, while there won’t be a BlizzCon this year, Blizzard is looking forward to bringing it back in the future, especially with next year marking the event’s 20th anniversary.
