Game Science announced today that its recently released Soulslike RPG Black Myth: Wukong has reached 10 million units in sales across all platforms. The game launched just three days ago on August 20. It also holds one of Steam’s highest concurrent player counts and is even driving increased sales of PlayStation 5 consoles in China.
Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad stated in a post on X: “This makes [Black Myth: Wukong] one of the fastest-selling games of all time, surpassing Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy within the same timeframe.” He further explained in a blog post that the game is performing exceptionally well in China due to its availability on Steam and its thematic elements drawn from Chinese mythology, particularly the classic novel Journey to the West featuring Sun Wukong as the protagonist. The game’s high-quality graphics, unique gameplay, and cultural relevance have resonated strongly with Chinese gamers.
Black Myth: Wukong currently holds the record for the most-played single-player title in Steam’s history, according to SteamDB, and is second only to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in terms of overall playtime. Consultant Daniel Camillo mentioned in a post on X that PS5 sales are significantly increasing in China’s largest electronics market largely thanks to Wukong. Niko Partners CEO Lisa Cosmas Hanson confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that Wukong is driving high console sales on Alibaba.
Despite its success, Game Science has faced criticism for past sexist remarks made by its founders, to which the studio responded with “No comment” when questioned by PC Gamer. Some players have reported performance issues with Wukong, prompting Game Science to issue an apology on the game’s Steam page. However, these issues have not impacted the game’s sales.
