Released by Azur Games in 2021, Kingdom Clash was inspired by the best features of the battler genre. The initial release showed steady metrics, but the team worked on new features over the next four months to boost the game’s growth. One significant addition was the PvP element, which has become the primary driver of monetization for the game.
In a guest post, Azur Games’ producer Nikolay Alekseev shares insights into the behind-the-scenes development of Kingdom Clash and the impact of the changes on the game’s metrics.
Kingdom Clash started as a typical battler with classic balance and mechanics but underwent several iterations. While not all experiments were successful, the game has consistently earned around $500,000 monthly and remains in active development.
The biggest boosts to monetization came from experimenting with campaign difficulty and developing PvP elements.
Initially, Kingdom Clash aimed to combine the best features from existing battlers, enhancing them and making improvements.
The game initially offered:
- A campaign with two hours of unique content
- Basic combat with a variety of troops and heroes
- PvE battles against bots
- A battle pass and a store for soft and hard currencies
These initial features led to promising metrics, prompting the team to focus on further developing the game.
Over the first four months, the team analyzed the campaign’s performance and effectiveness of classic approaches from competitors. Simultaneously, they worked on PvP, which eventually became the main driver of monetization for the game.
The campaign and PvP modes played essential roles in maintaining player interest. Introducing challenging moments within the campaign and gradually slowing down the pace to encourage engagement with PvP proved to be effective strategies.
The game’s combat system involves three factions with a variety of units and heroes, each offering unique tactics and strategies. Players aim to build a balanced army to defeat opponents, with no strict patterns but natural advantages based on choices and combinations.
Adding boss battles with unique mechanics improved long-term retention and monetization. Players found creating specialized formations for boss battles to be engaging and strategically rewarding.
Features such as auto-battle and battle acceleration have been well-received by players aiming for high leaderboard rankings, contributing to increased monetization.
Continuing to focus on updates, events, and new content, the game has seen significant growth, with earnings in September nearly 50% higher than in January.
