Get ready to relive the magic of the iconic ’90s PC game Backyard Baseball as it makes its way to Steam on October 10, 27 years after its original release, for just $10.
Beloved by a generation of sports fans who are now in their 20s and 30s, Backyard Baseball holds a special place in their hearts. From whimsical gameplay features like an outfield around a swimming pool to the unforgettable neighborhood kids with pitches that burst into flames, this arcade-style baseball game captivated players with its charm and nostalgia.
Even former NFL player Jason Kelce expressed interest in reviving the Backyard Sports franchise on his podcast. However, Playground Sports acquired the rights before Kelce could make his move, leaving fans speculating about the future of the series.
The journey of Backyard Baseball’s IP from its original creator, Humungous Entertainment, to Playground Productions reflects the game’s enduring legacy. Now under Playground’s care, characters like Pablo Sanchez will receive the attention they deserve as the company looks to revitalize the beloved franchise.
Playground Productions founder Lindsay Barnett, a former teacher, shared her excitement about the project, stating, “Backyard Baseball was a childhood favorite of mine. We are committed to preserving its legacy while also looking towards the future with new releases in the Backyard Sports series, starting with Backyard Baseball 1997.”
Reviving Backyard Baseball involved more than just acquiring the IP. With the original source code lost since 1997, Playground enlisted the help of Mega Cat Studios to remaster the game for modern PCs. Following a successful remaster, Mega Cat and Playground plan to bring back other fan favorites from the franchise.
