Atari and Plaion have unveiled a new console resulting from their partnership: The Atari 7800+ console, a modernized version of the 1986 7800 console. The updated console features HDMI connectivity and includes a Wireless CX78+ Gamepad, with compatibility for Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. Pre-orders for the 7800+ are now open with a planned launch date in winter 2024.
In addition to the Wireless CX78+ controller, Atari and Plaion have introduced the CX40+ Wireless Joystick. The former is a recreation of the original 7800 controller, while the latter replicates the CX40 joystick. Both controllers connect wirelessly to the 7800+ and 2600+ consoles and are compatible with original Atari 7800 and 2600 hardware through an adapter. They are also compatible with PCs.
Each console includes a copy of Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, a homebrew sequel to the classic game Crystal Castles, on a specially designed cartridge. Ten new game cartridges will be launched alongside the new console, featuring classic Atari titles such as Asteroids Deluxe, Berzerk, and Frenzy (all developed by Atari homebrew developer Robert DeCrescenzo). Additionally, Atari has announced several 2600+ game collection cartridges, including the Epyx Game Collection and the RealSports Collection.
Atari CEO Wade Rosen stated, “Expanding the Atari+ platform with new games, new wireless controllers, and the 7800+ console is a perfect follow-up to last year’s successful launch of the Atari 2600+.”
