Apple has recently announced updates to its sports-focused app in preparation for the upcoming NFL and college football seasons. These updates include Live Activities for all leagues, a new “dynamic drive tracker” feature that visually shows the ball’s position on the field, and support for play-by-play updates of football games.
Apple Sports, a free iOS app for sports enthusiasts, was launched in February to provide real-time updates, scores, and stats for the 15 most popular leagues, such as NCAA basketball, MLS, MLB, NBA, WNBA, NHL, and the Premier League.
The latest update from Apple added support for the NFL and NCAAF before their seasons begin. The most noteworthy new feature is Live Activities, which will be available with the release of iOS 18 and watchOS 11 this fall.
Live Activities in the Sports app allow users to quickly view live scores on their lock screens and keep up with play-by-play updates. This feature, currently available through the Apple TV app, will seamlessly transition to the Sports app with the arrival of iOS 18.
In addition, the dynamic drive tracker has been introduced to the Sports app, enabling football fans to track the ball’s location on the field in real-time. Betting odds, which update during the games, will be displayed for NFL and college football games as well.
Live play-by-play has been enhanced to help fans stay up to date with all the game action, including a filtered view that highlights scoring drives for important moments.
Apple has also announced upcoming updates for the Sports app, which will include a new drop-down navigation for main scorecard views and improved search functionality. More leagues, starting with the Champions League and Europa League in September, will be added soon.
The Apple Sports app is currently available in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada.
