Apple has announced the launch of collaborative playlists for Apple Music subscribers with the release of iOS 17.3. This new feature allows users to collaborate on playlists with friends and family, inviting each other to select tracks and react to specific songs using emojis.
The collaborative playlist feature provides an easy way to share and plan the soundtrack for events like parties or game nights. This release follows Spotify’s introduction of a similar feature called “Jam” a few months prior.
To initiate the collaborative playlist feature, users can navigate to a playlist and click the new “Collaborate” button that appears next to the download icon at the top right of the screen. Persons invited to the playlist will receive a text to join in, and everyone in the playlist can add, delete, or reorder songs.
Although the rollout of collaborative playlists was initially slated for iOS 17, Apple previously mentioned that it was delayed until 2024. Additionally, Apple has introduced a new SharePlay feature that allows users to contribute to what’s playing in a car when streaming music through Apple Music. Listeners can control the music from their own devices via an invite, even without an Apple Music subscription.
Furthermore, the launch of iOS 17.3 introduces Apple’s new Stolen Device Protection feature, aimed at preventing unauthorized access to personal information in the event of theft.
To activate Stolen Device Protection, users can go to their device settings, tap “Face ID & Passcode,” enter their device passcode, then turn on the Stolen Device Protection feature. It is important to activate this feature before the device is lost or stolen for it to be effective.
