Apple announced in September that its next-gen AI features would be rolling out to supported hardware in October. According to Bloomberg, the rollout of these AI features, collectively known as Apple Intelligence, is set to begin on October 28.
The AI toolkit will be included in the iOS 18.1 update for the iPhone 15 Pro series, the entire iPhone 16 series, and iPads with M1 (or newer) silicon. However, this release is just a phased rollout and not the full Apple Intelligence package promised earlier.
Among the features included in this rollout are Writing Tools, which offer AI-driven tasks like summarization, proofreading, and style adjustment. These tools will be available in various Apple products such as Notes, Mail, and Pages, as well as third-party apps.
Additionally, the update will introduce a new Reduce Interruptions mode that silences non-urgent notifications and notification summaries that prioritize important alerts. More substantial updates, like ChatGPT integration, are expected in future updates.
Apple is taking a cautious approach to the rollout to ensure a smooth experience and eliminate major bugs on its AI cloud servers. While the initial release is focused on English (US) language, support for more languages will be added gradually over the next year.
Overall, the staggered rollout of Apple Intelligence allows for refinement and avoids the pitfalls seen by other tech giants in the AI space. The gradual introduction of features ensures a more polished product and a better user experience in the long run.
