Apple
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s innovative approach to artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to revolutionize the way we interact with technology. By integrating cutting-edge machine learning and AI capabilities into everyday devices, Apple is changing the game.
With Apple Intelligence, users can expect a more conversational Siri, automated proofreading and text summarization capabilities across various apps, and lightning-fast image generation. This AI ecosystem is designed to enhance user experiences and streamline operations across Apple’s product lineup. Here’s all you need to know about Apple’s transformative new AI.
Apple Intelligence Release Date and Compatibility
Originally set for a formal release in September alongside iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple has decided to delay the launch of Apple Intelligence. Currently available to developers, it is likely to be released to the public in the 18.1 rollout scheduled for October. The AI features will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPads, and Macs with M1 or newer chips. However, these features are only available in English at launch due to the intensive processes that require newer hardware.
Developers in Apple’s Developer program gained access to an early version of Intelligence in July with the release of iOS 18.1 beta.
New AI Features
Apple Intelligence focuses on three main functions: writing assistance, image creation and editing, and enhancing Siri’s capabilities. The AI spans across Apple’s product line, mirroring features from macOS to iOS and iPadOS, including tools like Writing Tools, Image Playground, Memories in Photos, and Siri enhancements.
iPadOS, paired with Apple Pencil, unlocks additional features like Smart Script and Math Notes in the Notes app.
Although Apple Intelligence has shown potential in early testing, some features are still under development and may not be fully functional yet.
Writing Tools
The Writing Tools feature integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia offers proofreading, rewriting, and text summarization capabilities across Apple’s applications. Third-party developers can also leverage Writing Tools in their apps through API calls.
Within the Mail app, Apple Intelligence provides short summaries of inbox contents and offers Smart Reply suggestions. The Notes app will see improvements with audio transcription, summarization features, and a new calculator called Math Notes.
Image Playground
The Image Playground app handles image creation and editing, allowing users to generate pictures in seconds in artistic styles like Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. Memories in the Photos app is enhanced to create storyline-driven short films based on selected images.
Additional features like Clean Up and improved Search functions will be available once Apple Intelligence clears the public beta.
Siri
Siri benefits greatly from Apple Intelligence, with improved conversational speech and natural language processing. Siri’s memory becomes more persistent, enabling better interactions and switching between spoken and written prompts.
Apple Intelligence Privacy
Privacy is paramount in the Apple Intelligence experience, with the use of a private and secure AI compute cloud named Private Cloud Compute (PCC) to handle user queries and operations. Most routine activities are performed on-device, leveraging Apple’s latest processors to ensure data privacy.
Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT Partnership
Apple has partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT functionality into Siri and Writing Tools, enhancing capabilities for image and text generation. The partnership ensures privacy protections and efficient query handling.
Apple Intelligence Trained on Google’s Tensor Processing Units
Apple chose to train key components of Apple Intelligence using Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for computational efficiency. This departure from the norm in AI training highlights a potential shift in the industry towards proprietary chip development by tech giants.
