Apple Intelligence is set to launch on iPhones, iPads, and Macs later this summer, with reports suggesting that Apple may introduce a monthly subscription fee for access to certain advanced features, according to Bloomberg’s Marc Gurman.
While the basic features will remain free, Apple is considering offering additional features through a subscription service called “Apple Intelligence+” in the future, similar to its iCloud subscription model.
Due to the longevity of Apple devices and fewer design changes, the company is exploring new revenue streams through software subscription models as consumers are holding onto their devices longer. This move aims to diversify Apple’s income and reduce the company’s reliance on hardware sales.
Apple has already revealed plans to take a share of subscription fees charged by AI model partners, including Anthropic and Google, as well as partners in the Chinese market. This potential subscription model for premium Apple Intelligence functions aligns with Apple’s strategy to expand its revenue streams and adapt to market changes.
While older Macs can run the upcoming macOS Sierra, newer hardware is required for features like Game Mode and iPhone Mirroring. The new AI features will specifically require an M1 processor or newer on Macs. The details of the subscription model, its offerings, and pricing are yet to be disclosed.
