Apple has finally introduced support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in its Messages app with the release of the second developer beta of iOS 18 earlier this week.
RCS is a messaging protocol that utilizes the internet to enable users to send and receive files, high-quality images, see typing indicators, get read receipts, start group chats, and more. Previously, iPhone users were limited to sending SMS or MMS messages from the Messages app, but now they can communicate with anyone using a device that supports RCS, including most Android phones. This update expands the messaging capabilities of iPhone users beyond just iMessage users.
However, messages from Android devices will still appear as green bubbles in iMessage.
Currently, support for RCS is primarily available through U.S. carriers such as T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. While the RCS toggle is visible for iOS 18 developer beta users, the feature will only work if their mobile carrier supports RCS and has updated their network bundle for iOS 18. Future updates may extend RCS support to other regions.
Apple first announced the addition of RCS support to iOS 18 during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) keynote earlier this month.
According to Apple’s press release detailing iOS 18, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging when communicating with non-Apple device users.
Both iPhone and Android users have been eagerly awaiting RCS support from Apple, as it streamlines communication and sharing of content regardless of the device being used. Google has also been advocating for Apple to bridge the blue and green bubble messaging divide for years.
The developer beta of iOS 18 also introduced the feature that allows users to mirror their iPhones on Mac displays.
