Wireless charging has been on the fringe for years, mainly limited to flagship phones due to slow charging speeds. However, Android 15 is changing the game by potentially enabling wireless charging on phones with NFC technology instead of a dedicated coil. Android Authority unveiled this potential feature in the source code of Android 15’s first user beta.
Not new, but definitely noteworthy
The Wireless Charging Standard over NFC (WLC) isn’t new, as it was announced in May 2020 by the NFC Forum. The technology offers convenient and efficient charging, especially for smaller devices like wearables and earbud cases. However, it is limited by a maximum charging speed of 3 watts compared to traditional wireless charging pads.
Limitations that make it less appealing
While Google may not implement NFC wireless charging for phones due to speed limitations, it could be a perfect fit for smaller gadgets like earbuds or smart tags. There’s speculation that Google might utilize this technology for a stylus in its next-generation foldable device.
It’s uncertain if Google will introduce this feature in Android 15 or Android 16, but the technology certainly has the potential to revolutionize wireless charging in the future.
