Apple AirTags are a useful tool for tracking valuable items like wallets, keys, luggage, and backpacks. With various technologies, you can track your belongings from both short and long distances using a compatible Apple device, such as an iPhone 15 Plus. But how far can you actually track your items with AirTags? Let’s dive in.
AirTags range, explained
The range of AirTags varies depending on the tracking method used. A Bluetooth connection works when your AirTags are near your Apple device. Otherwise, Apple’s Find My network comes into play automatically behind the scenes.
If you’re within approximately 30 feet of your AirTag with an iPhone 11 or newer, you can accurately locate your AirTag (even its direction) using Ultra Wideband technology.
Bluetooth vs. Ultra Wideband vs. Find My
When connected via Bluetooth, the typical range for an AirTag is around 30 feet or 10 meters. However, utilizing Apple’s Find My network allows the AirTag to be located through anonymous relays from other Apple devices, providing essentially unlimited range as long as another device is within Bluetooth range and connected to the internet. You can track your AirTag’s location on a map in the Find My app.
Ultra Wideband, available on iPhone 11 models and newer, enables Precision Finding in the Find My app. Combined with other technologies, Precision Finding guides users to an AirTag’s location through various feedback mechanisms.
Apple, not Android
It’s important to note that AirTags only function with Apple devices. However, Google has introduced its own version of the Find My network for Android devices. The first products will come from Chipolo, expanding the options for Android users looking for similar tracking capabilities.
