If you are currently using the iOS 18 beta and own a pair of AirPods Pro 2, you will be delighted to discover some exciting new features. The latest firmware update, 7A294, introduces new hands-free options that allow you to interact with Siri by simply nodding your head for “yes” or shaking it for “no.”
Once the firmware update is complete, you will be guided through a setup process with easy-to-follow dialogs that will help you enable these new features.
The head gestures for interacting with Siri are straightforward. When asked to accept a call, you can nod your head to confirm or shake it sideways to decline. These gestures can be found in the AirPods Pro settings menu, complete with a step-by-step walkthrough to try out the feature before fully committing to it. You will also receive auditory feedback as you nod or shake your head, confirming that the feature is working as intended.
Additionally, you have the option to choose whether nodding confirms or if shaking your head represents agreement. This flexibility is particularly useful for individuals with limited movement, although most users may not feel the need to switch between the two.
In the official changelog for the firmware update, Apple also mentions the introduction of Voice Isolation for phone calls, designed to enhance clarity by eliminating background noise. The update also promises lower latency and improved audio bitrate for gaming, along with enhancements to the Personalized Volume feature.
Future updates for AirPods Pro are expected to include new hearing aid features. It remains to be seen if these features will be extended to other AirPods models such as the AirPods 4 or the AirPods Max.
