After nearly a year since the original Google Pixel Tablet launched, speculation is growing about the potential release of the Pixel Tablet 2. Rumors suggest that Google may introduce a new iteration of the Pixel Tablet as soon as next month, but with a twist that may surprise fans.
@MysteryLupin on X (formerly Twitter) reports that Google is planning to rebrand the Pixel Tablet by excluding the charging/speaker dock from the package. The dock, which allows the tablet to transform into a smart display, has been a key selling point of the Pixel Tablet. The idea of selling the Pixel Tablet without this unique feature is certainly intriguing.
The current Pixel Tablet model with the dock is priced at $499, with additional docks available at $129 each. A dock-less version of the Pixel Tablet could potentially be sold at a lower price point, estimated around $370 to $350.
Is this the right move for the Pixel Tablet?
While this strategy may make sense from a business standpoint, it may not necessarily appeal to consumers. Even if the Pixel Tablet is relaunched at $350 without the dock, it still remains more expensive than competing models such as the 9th-generation iPad ($329) and the Amazon Fire Max 11 ($230).
Moreover, the Pixel Tablet’s performance as a standalone Android tablet has received criticism for its dim screen, underpowered chipset, and mediocre battery life. With these limitations, even with the option of the speaker dock, it may not offer enough value compared to alternatives like the Nest Hub.
Introducing a cheaper Pixel Tablet without addressing its underlying issues may not fully resonate with consumers. The tablet’s generic features, coupled with the unreliability of Google Assistant, could still leave it overpriced even with potential discounts.
Additionally, rumors suggest that Google will debut a “Pen and Bluetooth Keyboard” alongside the dock-less Pixel Tablet, with each accessory priced at 100 euros. While intriguing, comparable bundles from competitors like Amazon offer more value, indicating that Google may need to rethink its strategy to compete effectively.
The scheduled launch date for the “new” Pixel Tablet and accessories is on May 10, leaving consumers curious about what the future holds for this device. As things stand, the path forward for the Pixel Tablet remains uncertain.
