The FDA passed a resolution in November 2022 allowing Americans to purchase hearing aids over-the-counter, leading to a new mini-industry. Companies quickly developed technology previously restricted by healthcare regulations.
Consumer electronics companies also saw an opportunity. In September, Apple announced plans to introduce hearing aid features to the AirPods Pro 2 through an upcoming iOS update.
I had the chance to test a demo version of the feature at an iPhone 16 event. Although the test was incomplete, Apple later provided TechCrunch with access to the final feature.
The new Hearing Test feature by Apple is painless and reminiscent of elementary school hearing tests. It is easily accessible from the Settings menu when AirPods Pro 2 are connected and in use.
After answering a few questions and ensuring proper AirPods fit, the test monitors for absolute silence before running through tones to assess hearing range.
Results show the extent of hearing loss detected, with the app only offering the hearing aid feature to users falling within the mild to moderate hearing loss range.
For more severe cases of hearing loss, Apple recommends seeking professional help, while those with normal hearing may benefit from the Media Assist feature for selective amplification.
Although the feature may take some adjustment, it can significantly improve daily life by enhancing speech clarity in various environments.
The feature may face social challenges as users adapt to using technology that improves hearing but resembles traditional headphones. However, a simple explanation can help overcome any perceived social norms.
