Recently, reports emerged online revealing that thousands of ‘pay-to-cheat’ players had their information stolen and their Call of Duty accounts compromised. It was disclosed that a network of three cheat providers had over 700,000 accounts affected by an ‘unidentified threat actor’. Additionally, more than 3.6 million Battlenet accounts were targeted, with cheaters having their payment and personal data stolen and shared online.
The situation took a more sinister turn when users fell victim to a crypto-wipe attack, where the attackers accessed their crypto wallets and emptied their funds in mere seconds. This attack specifically targeted users who engaged in cheating in video games, leading some to label it as a vigilante attack. Regardless of the morality behind it, hundreds of thousands of users have been impacted by this breach.
Bittersweet Situation
The severity of the situation prompted Activision Blizzard to collaborate with cheat providers to address the issue. Activision’s legal team intervened to shut down another cheat service, and now they are working in partnership with these platforms to help affected users. The breach, as confirmed by vx-underground, impacted over half a million Activision accounts, necessitating the company’s involvement in the resolution process.
In a statement released by vx-underground, it was noted that Elite PVPers, a cheat provider, confirmed the compromise of over 40,000 valid user accounts. These credentials were newly stolen and not part of prior data breaches. Many impacted users reported their crypto wallets being drained, although the exact amount stolen is unknown.
Furthermore, it was clarified that not all affected users were cheaters, as some utilized these services to enhance latency, employ VPN technology, or enable third-party controller devices.
9-Year-Old Accused of Killing Father While Copying Call of Duty
Social media echoes a sentiment that it’s difficult to sympathize with cheaters. The recent events serve as a warning for cheaters, current and potential, that using malicious methods to alter gameplay comes with significant risks and minimal rewards.
It’s a stark reminder that cheating is never a safe or viable option.
