Baldur’s Gate 3 was the figurative belle of the ball at this year’s Game Developers Conference — drawing the admiration and approbation of most attendees. It also won Game of the Year at the GDC Awards. Developers from Larian Studios discussed the game’s creation process at GDC panels, with director Swen Vincke giving an extensive talk about the importance of iteration.
Vincke openly shared challenges faced by Larian during development, such as relocating its Russian team due to the war in Ukraine and adjusting the launch date in response to Starfield. Vincke emphasized the importance of maintaining the game’s vision despite challenges. He highlighted the need for developers to organize for iteration and flexibility, showcasing charts detailing the evolving development pipeline.
Vincke showcased how the game evolved over time, with early builds being almost unrecognizable from the final version. For example, an early version featured Astarion as a chalky-skinned tiefling trickster instead of the handsome high elf vampire in the release version. Vincke stated, “Things have changed since then.”
