The movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a perfect reflection of its title — aliens invade a small town disguised as clowns, and chaos ensues. Now, this unique premise is being adapted into an asymmetrical horror video game.
During a hands-on demo at PAX East, I had the opportunity to experience this multiplayer adaptation of the 1980s cult classic and speak with the team behind it. The process of adapting Killer Klowns involved a perfect blend of movie practical effects and gaming expertise, leading to intriguing gameplay elements like the visual representation of clown blood.
Back from outer space
At the Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game demo, I met with Jared Gerritzen, chief creative officer at Illfonic, and Jordan Mathewson, the design director on the project. The decision to work on Killer Klowns stemmed from a chance encounter at Gamescom, leading to a unique collaboration between Illfonic and Teravision. The game’s absurd and silly nature, typical of the Killer Klowns movie, is what made this project stand out.
If it were any other IP, I don’t think that we would have done it.
Illfonic’s expertise in asymmetrical multiplayer games, demonstrated through titles like Friday the 13: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, made it a perfect fit for bringing Killer Klowns to life in the gaming world.
The collaboration with the Chiodo Brothers, creators of the original movie, provided valuable insights into incorporating comedy and horror elements seamlessly into the game. The Chiodo Brothers’ vision influenced the design of the Klowns, ensuring they were both fun and menacing.
Cream of the crop
My first demo experience involved playing as a Klown, using unique abilities to hunt down human survivors in an ’80s amusement park-themed map. The gameplay mechanics, such as “Klownalities,” added a touch of humor to the otherwise intense gameplay, reminiscent of classic horror-comedies.
The attention to detail in creating elaborate death scenes, similar to Mortal Kombat‘s fatalities, showcases the team’s commitment to capturing the essence of the Killer Klowns movie. These features, combined with future updates planned for additional content, promise a diverse and engaging gaming experience.
The hunt is on
As gameplay unfolds, the tension between Klowns and survivors escalates, with strategic elements like activating Lackey Generators and utilizing unique abilities to gain an advantage. The blend of horror and comedy keeps players on their toes, making every encounter with a Klown a thrill.
What does clown blood look like?
The close collaboration between Illfonic and the Chiodo Brothers allowed for the seamless integration of practical effects from the movie into the digital realm of the game. Maintaining a balance between digital artistry and practical effects was crucial in bringing the Klowns to life in a visually appealing manner.
Fighting for your life
Playing as a human survivor creates a thrilling experience, with the constant threat of Klowns lurking around every corner. The addition of minigames for deceased players to influence the match adds an extra layer of strategy and engagement, ensuring every player remains involved throughout the game.
The game within the game
The dynamic gameplay mechanics, such as the unique abilities of each Klown and the inclusion of minigames for deceased players, elevate the gaming experience to new heights. The team’s focus on player engagement and strategic gameplay elements promises an exciting and immersive gaming experience.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game releases on June 4, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Steam, and Xbox Series consoles.
