Microsoft Edge now offers a feature to limit the amount of RAM it uses, potentially improving the performance of your PC, especially while gaming. This feature, currently in testing in the Canary version of Microsoft Edge, allows users to prioritize RAM access to other applications or games. If successful, this feature could be rolled out to all users based on feedback and evaluation by Microsoft.
Recently discovered by X user Leopeva64, the setting for this feature can be found in the System and Performance section of the latest Canary version of Microsoft Edge. It offers two options for controlling PC resources: Control resources when gaming, or Always. Users can adjust a slider to determine the browser’s RAM usage based on their PC’s physical RAM, ranging from 1GB to 16GB.
A new section on the Settings page could let you control how much RAM Edge can use, you can also choose whether this control is activated only when you are playing a game or always:https://t.co/YiCu5igL0U pic.twitter.com/pE29PI6FfR

This new feature can significantly benefit users with lower-end PCs, as it can help other applications like Microsoft Word or Slack run faster when Edge is running in the background. For gamers multitasking with Edge open, this feature ensures that more resources are allocated to gameplay. While the exact rollout date for this feature is unknown, Microsoft continues to focus on enhancing the efficiency of its web browser.
Microsoft Edge, based on Chromium, offers several performance-enhancing features like reducing CPU consumption during gaming and a sleeping tab feature to save system resources. This new RAM limiting feature adds another layer of customization for users, distinguishing it from other browsers like Google Chrome.
