Even though Tesla’s electric vehicles are cutting-edge, they do come with some issues, such as a malfunctioning touchscreen panel. When this happens, you may find yourself unable to access all controls or even play a game on your Tesla while parked at a Supercharger.
A dysfunctional Tesla screen can hinder most of the vehicle’s features, as nearly all functions (except driving) are linked to the large touchscreen. This can make it challenging to use your Tesla effectively until the problem is fixed.
Fortunately, Tesla has made it easy to address this issue without needing to visit a dealership. If you encounter a frozen Tesla screen, here is how you can reset it and regain full control of your vehicle.
Resetting the display on a Tesla
Most issues with a Tesla’s infotainment system can be resolved by simply resetting the infotainment. This process is straightforward and applies to all Tesla models.
It’s essential to note that during the reset, the screen will go dark, so it’s safer to pull over and not drive until the process is complete.
To reset the infotainment on your Tesla, follow these steps:
Step 1: Shift the car into park.
Step 2: Hold down both scroll wheels on the steering wheel until the screen turns black.
Step 3: After 30 seconds, the Tesla logo should appear, and the infotainment system will restart, allowing you to use the display as usual.
Restart the Tesla itself
Sometimes, resetting just the infotainment system may not be sufficient to resolve the issue. You might need to restart the car’s systems as well. If you still have some access to the car’s software, follow these steps:
Step 1: Park in a safe spot and close all doors.
Step 2: Navigate to Controls > Safety & Security.
Step 3: Press the Power Off button.
Step 4: Wait a few minutes for the car to restart its systems. Avoid touching anything during this time.
Step 5: After two minutes, press the brake pedal to wake the car.
Hard restart your Tesla without using the screen
If you need to perform a hard reset on your Tesla and don’t have access to any software, the method will vary depending on your model. Follow these instructions for a hard reset:
Step 1: Park the car in a safe spot and close all doors.
Step 2: For Model S or X, press and hold the brake pedal, both scroll wheels, and both steering wheel buttons. For Model Y, press and hold the brake pedal and both scroll wheels. Keep them pressed until the screen reactivates.
If you still encounter issues after the reset, you may need to schedule a repair with Tesla.
