Riot Games has announced its plans to breathe new life into its collectible card game, Legends of Runeterra, in 2023. The cornerstone of the roadmap is a regular three-month release cycle that will alternate between Expansions, Live Balance Patches, and Variety Sets.
Each quarter of the 2023 roadmap will introduce an Expansion, focusing primarily on new champions and game mechanics. These expansions will be the biggest updates of the year, featuring brand-new and returning champions alongside a revamped PvP experience. Following each Expansion release, players can anticipate a significant Live Balance Patch the following month, dedicated to addressing any necessary improvements.
After an Expansion and Live Balance Patch, the cycle will culminate with the release of a Variety Set, described as a “quarterly booster pack” containing new non-Champion cards and additional balance updates. This cycle will repeat throughout 2023, ensuring regular updates for Legends of Runeterra.
In addition to the release cycle, Riot Games has outlined broader plans for 2023. Players can look forward to new champions, relic balance updates, a competitive PvP overhaul, and new play formats in the near future. Future updates will also include new achievements, legacy content access, and monthly Path of Champions adventures. Plans are also in motion to enable international play and support player-hosted tournaments, though these updates are still in development.
With a busy year ahead, Riot Games is transparent about its roadmap for Legends of Runeterra. The game is available on PC, iOS, and Android, with special bonuses for Xbox Game Pass subscribers who sync their accounts.
