If you’re an iPhone or iPad user of the popular live-streaming service YouTube TV, you’re in for a treat. YouTube TV, with over 8 million subscribers, has now introduced multiview live on Apple’s mobile devices, just as promised.
The functionality mirrors that of a television. YouTube TV selects the programs available in multiview, allowing you to watch them all simultaneously, with sound coming from one of the shows. Tapping another program switches the audio. Options for multiview include sports, news, business, or weather, although watching four news channels simultaneously during an election year may not be advisable. The timing is perfect for March Madness, and we hope viewers will have the option to select their own games in the future rather than being limited to YouTube TV’s choices. This feature will be particularly appealing during the NFL Sunday Ticket season in the fall.
On iPhone and iPad, multiview also supports picture-in-picture, a feature that has been available on iOS for a couple of years now. This enables you to watch content in a small window while multitasking. While this might be acceptable on an iPad, it’s quite small on an iPhone. You can also adjust the stream quality through the settings.
One missing feature at launch is the ability to stream the four screens to a television using AirPlay. However, if you already have a YouTube TV subscription and a TV with app support, this may not be necessary. YouTube TV is compatible with most modern streaming devices, offering over 100 channels for $73 per month with unlimited recording and support for up to six profiles under a single subscription (each profile requiring its own Google account).
