Nvidia unveiled an AI-driven game demo called Convert Protocol, where players take on the role of a detective investigating a mystery in a high-end hotel. In this unique demo, instead of choosing from predetermined options, players use their voice via a microphone to interact with non-playable characters (NPCs) and gather information.
I had the opportunity to witness this demo along with a few other journalists in a private setting. As the demo began and Nvidia’s Seth Schneider, senior product manager for ACE, guided us through, the potential of this AI-driven gameplay was palpable. The ability to ask any question and make any choice is a dream for detective-style games. It offers a truly immersive experience where players can shape the narrative through their own inquiries.
Schneider even encouraged us to ask questions to the AI-powered door greeter NPC. However, despite some interesting queries, the AI NPCs demonstrated limitations in their responses, sticking to predefined boundaries to stay on topic and avoid deviating from the game’s context.

Interactions with these AI-driven NPCs were limited to the game’s context, with NPCs providing relevant responses based on the given scenario. While the technology behind Nvidia’s AI is impressive, it doesn’t necessarily enhance the overall gameplay experience. It essentially expands dialogue options rather than revolutionizing the gaming experience.
Although the AI can provide responses that make sense within the context of a question, the lack of deeper understanding or context can sometimes result in answers that don’t significantly differ from pre-programmed dialogue options.
While the possibilities presented by Nvidia’s AI demo are exciting, the practical implications for game design and player experience remain to be seen. The reliance on AI for dialogue interactions may not necessarily lead to significant improvements in gameplay dynamics.
