Truecaller, a popular Caller ID app, protects over 374 million users by blocking between 38 and 40 billion spam calls annually. The latest “Max” update for Android premium subscribers takes spam call filtering to the next level, using AI to block any call not from an approved contact or potentially identified as spam, even if not listed in Truecaller’s database.
This feature is exclusively available for Android users as Apple restricts similar services on iOS devices. In light of a slight revenue decline in Q4, Truecaller is also facing new challenges in its biggest market, India, where a proposed caller ID service could rival its offerings.
Despite potential risks of missing important calls, Truecaller sees a business opportunity in leveraging AI technology to combat spam callers and attract more premium subscribers. The app’s pricing ranges from $9.99 per month to $99.99 per year, based on the number of users covered.
By introducing more automated features like default call blocking, Truecaller aims to streamline user experience and improve spam protection. The company’s focus on AI extends to features like call screening and assistance, reinforcing its commitment to innovation.
While the AI-powered Max feature may not be flawless initially, Truecaller is confident in its ability to differentiate between spam and legitimate calls. Users can help improve the system by providing feedback and unblocking wrongly flagged numbers.
To access the new spam-blocking feature, users must update their Truecaller app to version 13.58 or later and navigate to Settings > Block.
