Sony is reportedly pausing production of the PlayStation VR2 headsets due to a backlog of unsold headsets.
This information comes from a report by Bloomberg, which states that PSVR2 sales have been declining since its release in February 2023, leading to an accumulation of unsold inventory. Sony has manufactured 2 million headsets but has not been able to sell them all yet, resulting in the decision to halt production until the backlog is addressed, as per Bloomberg’s sources.
If this report is accurate, it suggests a challenging future for Sony’s second headset. Despite being on the market for over a year, the PSVR2 has struggled due to a lack of exclusive content and first-party game support. Personally, I have found myself using my Meta Quest 3 more frequently than the PSVR2. The headset has not made as significant of an impact in the gaming industry as its predecessor, leading to an excess of unsold units. Bloomberg’s report does not provide information on when production of new PSVR2 headsets will resume.
Digital Trends reached out to Sony to verify the report and gain further insight into the company’s VR plans. We will update this article with any responses we receive.
Looking ahead to 2024, upcoming PSVR2 games include Aces of Thunder, Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate, Zombie Army VR, Metro Awakening, and Behemoth. On the headset’s first anniversary, Sony announced plans to explore compatibility with PCs, although there have been no updates on this initiative since then.
