Nintendo and Illumination announced they will make a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, set to release on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and overseas after the huge success of the 2023 film, breaking box office records for a game adaptation with $1.36 billion in revenue worldwide.
The new movie will be co-directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel writing the screenplay. Nintendo creators’ involvement was a key factor in the success of the previous film. The sequel will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures.
Illumination founder and CEO Melendantri and Shigeru Miyamoto, representative director and fellow of Nintendo, will be the producers on the film.
