Isaaman’s full International Women’s Day statement:
“On International Women’s Day, I want to shift the focus to men.
Despite the progress we’ve made at Women in Games, there is still work to be done. Our network of Ambassadors, supported by Keywords Studios, has grown to over 2,000 individuals across 77 countries. Our virtual events engage thousands for learning, inspiration, and networking. The theme for 2024 – ACTION – reflects our unwavering commitment to real change.
However, the reality is that the needle is not moving… To create a truly fair and safe space for women in games, we need allies. We need men.
Developers, senior executives, players – you hold the power to be a positive force in the industry. You shape the culture, set the standards, and influence everyone’s experiences. Here are some ways you can actively support and champion women:
1. Be a Bystander Who Steps In: If you witness harassment online or in the office, don’t stay silent. Speak up. Challenge sexist remarks, jokes, or stereotypes. Your intervention, no matter how small, can make a significant impact.
2. Champion Women’s Work: Amplify women’s voices, promote their achievements, and ensure their contributions are acknowledged and valued.
3. Hire and Promote Based on Merit: Focus on talent and experience when making hiring and promotion decisions. Diversify your teams for richer creative output and innovative games.
4. Mentor and Sponsor Women: Guide junior female colleagues, advocate for their advancement, and actively promote them for opportunities.
5. Advocate for Flexible Working Options: Support flexible work arrangements, remote opportunities, and parent-friendly policies.
These steps may seem small, but they have a significant impact in creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in the industry.
Becoming a Women in Games Ambassador: For those looking to go above and beyond, consider becoming a Women in Games Ambassador. Ambassadors play a vital role in promoting our mission and supporting the fair treatment of women in the industry.
The Power of Collaboration: Remember our Manifesto – the Fourteen Reasons for supporting Women in Games. It outlines the need for equal pay, representation, safety, and opportunities. Each reason is a call to action for the entire industry, including our male allies.
Building a More Inclusive Future Together: Change takes time. That’s why we’re hosting special events tailored for men this year. These events will provide a platform for discussion, education, and collaboration to drive change.
By working together, men and women can create a future where everyone in the games industry has equal opportunities, feels respected and safe, and where diversity and creativity thrive.
On this International Women’s Day, we reach out to our male allies. Join us. Be the change. Let’s create a world where everyone, regardless of gender, feels welcome in the gaming industry.
