When it comes to choosing a streaming music service or switching from one to another, Tidal is often compared to Spotify and Apple Music. However, Tidal stands out for its reputation as a provider of the highest quality streaming music available.
With a vast music library containing over 110 million tracks, Tidal offers some of the best lossless and hi-res music tracks in the streaming industry. There are currently different price tiers available based on the level of hi-res quality you prefer, including family plan options. Tidal also offers podcasts, Dolby Atmos tracks, and personalized playlists based on your listening habits. However, starting from April 10, 2024, Tidal will introduce new pricing tiers, making hi-res music more affordable for all users.
Read on to discover everything you need to know about Tidal.
What is Tidal?
Tidal is a music streaming subscription service with a catalog of tens of millions of songs, including exclusive content. It also offers podcasts, music videos, live concert recordings, and curated playlists. Originally owned by a group of musicians, Tidal was acquired by Square in 2021 but retains its artist-based influence.
Tidal provides CD-quality audio as a minimum and a selection of hi-res music, including Hifi and Max tracks up to 24-bit/192kHz with hi-res FLAC files. It also supports Dolby Atmos and Sony’s 360 Reality Audio for a more immersive audio experience.
How much does Tidal cost, and what’s included?
Tidal currently offers two main subscription tiers: HiFi and HiFi Plus, each with different features and pricing. Starting from April 10, 2024, Tidal will introduce three new tiers to simplify its subscription structure and offer access to its entire library in lossless audio, hi-res FLAC, and Dolby Atmos Music.
The new plans will include Individual, Family, Student, and Tidal for DJs options.
FLAC and MQA tracks
Two of the main hi-res track formats available on Tidal are HiRes FLAC and MQA. Tidal has shifted from the MQA format to the open-source FLAC format, offering higher bit rates and wider compatibility.
