Deezer, a popular streaming music service, has expressed support for the European Union’s €1.84 billion fine imposed on Apple for antitrust violations in the streaming music market. However, Deezer’s CEO Jeronimo Folgueira has called out Apple for their response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which he believes is deceptive and an attempt to evade European regulations.
In a statement released today, Folgueira cautiously praised the EU’s action against Apple, emphasizing the importance of addressing anti-competitive practices in the industry.
Deezer is among several developers who have criticized Apple’s new DMA rules, which include a Core Technology Fee for developers distributing apps outside of Apple’s App Store. This fee has been deemed excessive and obstructive for scaling app businesses profitably.
In response to Apple’s new terms, Deezer has stated that they see no benefit in switching to the DMA rules.
While some developers have announced their intention to switch to Apple’s new terms, larger companies like Spotify, Epic Games, Meta, Mozilla, and Microsoft have publicly criticized the tech giant’s actions.
