Dune: Part Two, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 Oscar-winning film Dune, has finally hit theaters and is dominating the box office in its opening weekend. Whether you are new to the world of Dune or a long-time fan, the film’s cliffhanger ending will leave you craving more. Luckily, fans are getting just that with a sneak peek at the upcoming survival MMO Dune: Awakening.
Developed by Funcom, the studio behind acclaimed titles such as Dune: Spice Wars, Conan Exiles, and Metal: Hellsinger, Dune: Awakening made its debut at Gamescom 2022, and now fans are treated to a new trailer showcasing the game’s world.
In an interview with Funcom Creative Director Joel Bylos, the team shared insights on the challenges of adapting such a deep lore from the book to the game, with a focus on capturing the vastness and scale of Arrakis, the desert planet central to the Dune universe.
Surviving Arrakis
In Dune: Awakening, players are thrust into the heart of Arrakis, facing the harsh desert environment of the planet. Starting alone in the desert, players must scavenge for essentials like equipment, shade, and water. Water, a precious resource on Arrakis, can be obtained through various means, including a ruthless yet necessary method involving other players’ blood.
However, the dangers of the planet extend beyond thirst, as massive sandworms lurk beneath the surface, posing a constant threat to anyone traversing the desert.
As players progress and establish themselves on the planet, they can find safe areas on the map to build homes, socialize, and engage in political intrigue reminiscent of the Dune series. Players can align themselves with one of the great houses, complete missions, and ascend the ranks to gain political power.
The Shifting Sands
For those more inclined towards PVP gameplay, Dune: Awakening offers designated zones for intense warfare, with players able to specialize in combat roles, base-building, and resource gathering.
In a unique twist, the game features a “shifting sands” mechanic, where a weekly storm alters the landscape, forcing players to adapt and explore new areas regularly. This dynamic element adds a layer of unpredictability and challenge to the gameplay.
With no set release date yet, Dune: Awakening is anticipated to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, offering players a chance to immerse themselves in the rich world of Dune and carve out their destiny on Arrakis.
