Brave is introducing its AI-powered assistant, Leo, to all Android users. Leo enables users to ask questions, translate pages, summarize content, create new content, and much more. This Android launch follows shortly after Brave initially released Leo for desktop users. Brave plans to make Leo accessible on iOS devices in the near future.
Leo has the capability to provide real-time summaries of webpages and videos, answer queries about content, generate written content, translate or rewrite pages, transcribe video or audio content, and even write code. The goal is for Brave users to rely on Leo for various tasks and inquiries, eliminating the need to use other LLMs like ChatGPT.
Users can leverage Leo to plan recipes, receive travel advice, compare products, and summarize lengthy webpages they may not have time to read in full.
Leo integrates Mixtral 8x7B from Anthropic, Claude Instant from Meta, as well as Llama 2 13B. While Mixtral 8x7B is the default LLM for Leo on desktop and Android, users can choose alternative LLMs or opt for Leo Premium for enhanced rate limits at $14.99 per month. A single subscription covers up to five devices across Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Brave ensures that interactions with Leo remain private and does not store chat data or utilize it for model training. All requests are processed through an anonymization server, and responses from Leo are discarded after generation. Additionally, users do not need a Brave account to access Leo. For those with a subscription, the company guarantees anonymity through unlinkable tokens, safeguarding user activity and email information.
To activate Leo on Android, users must open the browser, type in the address bar, and click “Ask Leo.” For an on-page chat experience, selecting the three dot menu and tapping “Leo” is necessary. Accessing Leo on Android requires updating to version 1.63. If the Brave Leo feature is not yet visible on your Android device, it will be gradually rolled out over the next few days.
Brave isn’t the sole browser company to launch an AI assistant recently. Opera introduced its AI assistant, Aria, last year. Developed in collaboration with OpenAI, Aria offers a chatbot-like interface for users to ask questions and receive responses.
