Ford EV owners can now access over 15,000 Tesla superchargers in the U.S. and Canada, thanks to a deal struck between the two automakers. This move is expected to influence the automotive industry in the near future.
Both new and existing Ford EV owners can request a free adapter to use Tesla’s fast charging stations if they are registered in Ford’s BlueOval Charge Network and order the adapter by June 30, 2024 at Ford.com/FastChargingAdapter. Future Ford EV buyers will be able to purchase the adapter for $230.
Until recently, all automakers and EV charging companies in the U.S. utilized the Combined Charging System (CCS) except Tesla, which operated with its own proprietary plugs and connectors. Tesla’s charging connector provides AC and up to 1 MW DC charging capabilities, which are considered to be superior to the CCS connectors.
After suggesting other automakers to adopt its charging standard, Tesla successfully convinced Ford to provide access to Tesla Superchargers. This partnership extends beyond simply using an adapter, as Ford plans to integrate Tesla’s charge port in their upcoming EV models starting in 2025.
Following Ford’s decision, other major automakers like GM, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, VW Group, and Stellantis also agreed to adopt Tesla’s charging technology, with plans to incorporate it in their future vehicles.
Despite this adoption, not all Tesla Superchargers will be available to Ford owners. Ford is working on educating its customers on how to locate, access, and utilize the superchargers with the same convenience as Tesla owners. A software update is also in the works to allow owners to find Tesla superchargers using Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or Ford’s built-in navigation system.
Tesla owners are known for their easy access and payment solutions at superchargers, a feature that sets them apart from competitors. Ford aims to provide a similar experience for BlueOval Charge Network customers by enabling payments through the FordPass App or the Charge Assist App in the vehicle’s touchscreen.
