Rumors of the demise of the Nokia phone name are untrue, and HMD Global, the licensee of the Nokia brand, has confirmed that more phones will be released. This news will surely delight fans of one of the most established names in mobile technology.
During a conversation with Adam Ferguson, HMD Global’s head of product marketing, at MWC 2024, Digital Trends clarified the situation amid the company’s announcement of efforts under the Nokia name.
An Enduring Legacy
“Nokia is a crucial part of our future,” Ferguson stated. “There is a rich heritage and a strong affection for the brand globally, and we are confident in continuing on that path.”
While rumors surfaced that HMD Global might drop the Nokia name and focus solely on a new brand, the company’s announcement of HMD Original and HMD Fusion for 2024 included the news that they will “revive an iconic Nokia device” this year.
“In our recent announcement, we made it clear that a new iconic Nokia phone is on the horizon,” added Ferguson. “It is based on one of the best-selling devices of all time.”
Evolution of Nokia
While the Nokia name remains, HMD Global’s focus on feature devices may indicate a shift towards its roots in feature phones. Ferguson hinted at more feature devices from the Nokia brand in the near future, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus amidst new initiatives under the HMD name.
Over the years, HMD Global has launched numerous Nokia smartphones, including the robust Nokia XR20 and repairable Nokia G42, along with a variety of feature phones. The brand’s market share in the U.S. for feature phone shipments is at 26%, according to Counterpoint Research.
Commitment to Nokia
Ferguson reassured that the Nokia brand is secure and integral to their strategy, with plans for more devices in the future. While Nokia’s focus may shift back to feature phones, the brand’s enduring presence is undeniable.
Despite past shifts in the mobile market landscape, Nokia’s resilience and enduring appeal remain evident, ensuring a strong future for the iconic brand.
