Tekken 8 emerges as the top-selling new game in January, trailing just behind Modern Warfare 3, reports industry-tracking firm Circana. Among the new releases that made it to the best-sellers list, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League secures the third position, sneaking in towards the end of the reporting period. Overall, the industry experiences a 15% year-on-year increase in sales.
According to Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive producer for games reports, the growth in digital content spending across various platforms, including Console, PC, VR, and a 5% rise in mobile games spending as reported by Sensor Tower, has been instrumental in driving the industry’s sales. Piscatella also mentions that January 2024 had a five-week reporting period, contributing to the notable increase compared to last year’s four-week reporting period.

The substantial growth in sales largely stems from game content, with a noticeable decline in hardware sales. Accessories, on the other hand, enjoy an impressive 45% increase compared to last January.
Piscatella mentions, “Gamepad spending increased by over 50% year-on-year,” highlighting the popularity of the PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Edge, which was the best-selling video game accessory in January. Additionally, the PlayStation Portal, classified under accessories, secured the 5th spot in January’s best-selling accessory rankings.
