The awards season for video games published in 2023 is wrapping up. Thus far, it appears that the people receiving the awards are not particularly diverse. However, an exception to this trend may be found at the Spawnies, hosted on IGN and set to air on February 29 at 6 p.m. Pacific time. A distinctive feature of the event is that around 90% of the award recipients are individuals from minority groups or women. Kahlief Adams, who is a technophile from the Bronx, is the creator of the Spawnies, known for his Spawn On Me podcast, which has enjoyed more than 1.5 million downloads and reached over 125 countries.
In addition to Adams, Riana Manuel-Peña, the director of brand & unified marketing at Zebra Partners, will co-host the Spawnies. The event is significant as it has been reported in reputable publications such as Forbes, Polygon, and The New York Times as a result of Adams’ conversations on race and games. Notably, the Spawnies is unique in that it is fan-voted and the winners are decided by the audience, rather than relying on the conventional and largely non-diverse media. Beyond his work on the Spawnies, Adams also works at Riot Games, where he serves as a project manager on the DEI Partnerships team. An interview with Adams has been conducted at the Dice Summit ahead of this year’s The Dice Awards event, with a transcript available.
Spawnies has received support and sponsorship from various companies, including Elgato, Double Fine, Tech Picasso, and Shopify. It has seen significant audience engagement and support on platforms like Twitch. ImageButton
