One of the three games available at no additional cost with a PlayStation Plus Essential subscription this February is Rollerdrome from Roll7 and Private Division. A lot of attention may be going to Foamstars, an odd multiplayer game launched free on PS Plus by Square Enix, but Rollerdrome stands out as the hidden gem in the lineup.
Initially released for PS5 and PC in August 2022, Rollerdrome was previously described as Max Payne meets Skate—a sports combat game where players roller-skate to perform tricks to gain ammo for shooting enemies with guns. With a simple yet satisfying action, Rollerdrome is a must-play for those looking for a thrilling gaming experience.
Blood Sport
In Rollerdrome, players control the character Kara Hassan, who competes in the titular sport involving combat with deadly weapons. The gameplay features a full combo system similar to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Skate titles, maintaining a balance between skateboarding and gun combat throughout the game. Additionally, players must manage ammo and health in gunfights, making the game more challenging and engaging.
In addition to dual-wielded pistols, Kara gains access to more weapons such as a shotgun and a grenade launcher, which are essential in defeating enemies. However, the limited ammo requires players to perform various tricks to regain shots, creating a seamless blend of skating and shooting gameplay.
Rollerdrome consistently introduces new weapons, enemy types, and boss encounters, maintaining a fresh experience for players. Furthermore, the game encourages players to improve through completing challenges and objectives, unlocking high-level tricks and new levels of gameplay depth.
Returning to Rollerdrome on PS5 reaffirmed the game’s immensely gratifying gameplay loops. With its stripped-down and exhilarating alternative to other third-person shooter games, Rollerdrome stands out as a unique experience, making it worth a try for gamers intrigued by its premise.
Rollerdrome is available on PS5 through PS Plus Essential until March 4, and is also available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
