Epic Games is gearing up to make a comeback to iOS in Europe, thanks to the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), the company has confirmed. In a blog post reflecting on the previous year and looking ahead to 2024, the Fortnite maker announced that it will be offering both the game and the Epic Games Store on mobile in Europe. This move is made possible by the DMA, which would allow Epic Games to operate a mobile games store.
While the company’s developer account had been banned from the App Store and Google Play due to intentional violations of in-app purchase rules, Epic Games has now been granted its Apple Developer Account and will soon begin developing the Epic Games Store on iOS, thanks to the new DMA.
Despite previous criticisms of Apple’s response to the situation, Epic Games intends to leverage the new regulations to once again compete on mobile. This includes operating the new mobile Epic Games Store and Fortnite in Europe through Epic Games Sweden AB, with development led by its Store team.
Although Fortnite’s return to iOS in Europe had been promised earlier, the details of the venture and the status of Epic Games’ Apple Developer account had not been confirmed at that time. The company has also indicated that it will continue to advocate for its position in the courts and with regulators regarding the legal aspects of Apple’s actions.
