We are nearing the conclusion of the European RMR 1 for the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, and we are starting to get a clear idea of which teams will be competing at the upcoming Major. Today, there was a major upset as Falcons’ high-profile team fell to AMKAL, resulting in their elimination from the qualifier.
So, how did this happen? Let’s take a closer look at the events that unfolded in Bucharest.
Falcons Disappoint in Bucharest
This can only be described as a disastrous outcome. After assembling a superteam with the goal of winning CS2 tournaments, Falcons, owned by Saudi investors, have been eliminated from the RMR for the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 with a 1:3 record. This performance is even worse than Falcons’ performance at the BLAST.tv Paris RMR last year, despite having players like NBK-, bodyy, and kennyS on their roster.
For the likes of Magisk and zonic, this is not what they had in mind when they joined the team. As four and five-time Major winners, respectively, it’s unthinkable that they won’t be present at their home Major in Copenhagen. Being reverse-swept in the final series against AMKAL was unexpected, but a remarkable performance from ICY in the final map led to Falcons’ elimination. On paper, Falcons should have been the clear winners. However, Counter-Strike isn’t played on paper.
What’s next for Falcons? It’s likely that Magisk and the former ENCE core of Snappi, SunPayus, and maden will be given more time to improve, despite this disappointing result. As for BOROS, the last surviving member of the previous Falcons roster, this may be his final appearance for the team. NiP’s failure at the RMR yesterday was bad, but somehow, this feels even worse.
NAVI Maintains Their Major Streak
A Counter-Strike Major without NAVI is unimaginable. As the only organization to have participated in every CS:GO Major, the team faced BetBoom in a 2:1 bracket match with the goal of extending their impressive record into CS2.
NAVI dominated on map one, securing a 13:4 victory on Overpass. They stumbled on Anubis, where BetBoom appeared to have all the answers. When it came down to the Nuke decider, NAVI displayed great resilience to bounce back, especially with standout performances from jL and Aleksib to secure the win.
As for BetBoom, they will face a tough matchup against Turkish team Eternal Fire. It’s a challenging draw, but BetBoom has shown enough potential to possibly win the 2:2 match. If not, they will have to go through the Last Chance Qualifier.
