Scopely, the publisher of Monopoly GO! and other popular games, has announced layoffs among its staff. The news was revealed on LinkedIn by industry observer Amir Satvat, who reported that the majority of the layoffs were at the Kingdom Maker studio.
The Kingdom Maker studio, which released a free-to-play medieval fantasy combat game for iOS and Android, was a significant part of Scopely’s mobile gaming portfolio prior to its acquisition by Savvy Games Group. Since the acquisition, Scopely has seen great success with titles like Monopoly GO! and Stumble Guys, resulting in fewer updates to Kingdom Maker and other older games.
Staff Impact
Details of the layoffs were shared by workers affected, including animator and tech artist Stefan Scrogan, character designer and illustrator Ellie Martin, and designer, illustrator, and maker Savannah Ervin, who confirmed their job losses.
Official Statement
Scopely provided an official statement to PocketGamer.biz explaining the layoffs, citing the end of their publishing partnership with Global Worldwide for the title Kingdom Maker, and the reassignment of the Scopely team to other projects. Despite this, Scopely remains an investor in Global Worldwide and expressed gratitude to the affected team members.
Support and Resources
In response to the recent job losses in the gaming industry, Amir Satvat has offered resources and support to affected employees, aiming to connect them with new employment opportunities.
