Supervillain Labs has received an investment from Aptos Labs and it has also partnered with Aptos to launch new Web3 games.
Supervillain Labs wants to bring players closer to game content through Web3. The collaboration aims to enable more efficient, and user-centric gaming experiences globally.
Aptos Labs, in addition to investing in Supervillain Labs’ launch and go-to-market strategy, will provide the foundation for the game studio’s creations through the Aptos blockchain – which focuses on lowest-latency, highest-throughput capabilities.
Choosing Aptos for the second time, Supervillain Labs sees the blockchain’s unmatched performance, low latency, and focus on user experience as pivotal. The Move programming language on Aptos ensures automatic fortification of Supervillain Labs’ creations, allowing their team to concentrate on crafting the games.
Leveraging Aptos’ features, including Parallel Execution and the Aptos Digital Asset Standard, Supervillain Labs aims to provide an immersive and interoperable gaming experience.
Supervillain Labs’ games, hosted on Aptos, will benefit from the blockchain’s efficiency and usability, removing onboarding barriers such as gas fees and prerequisite blockchain knowledge. Collaborations with other Aptos ecosystem projects will result in original games that bring the team’s vision to life.
Supervillain’s first title, Idle RPG, will feature Aptos-native NFT projects like Aptos Monkeys, Aptomingos, and Bruh Bears as characters. Players completing the Supervillain Suitability Test will receive unique NFTs based on their personality types. The game assets will be on the Aptos blockchain, ensuring compatibility with future Supervillain releases.
Mo Shaikh, CEO of Aptos Labs, said in a statement, “Together with Supervillain Labs, we are building a future where gaming can be a vehicle for sharing social and economic value, as well as connecting people all over the world.”
“We believe wholeheartedly in the power of bringing a Web2-feeling UX to Web3 to better the gamer experience for everyone,” said Lucas Ko, CEO of Supervillain Labs, in a statement. “We are confident that Aptos is the ideal technology for our games, and that our work with Aptos Labs will immediately expand the scope of game fandom in Web3 to encompass players, spectators, rare item traders, and those who build communities within the game.”
A game demo of Supervillain: Idle RPG will be available on Aptos at the end of February. Supervillain Labs and Aptos Labs will also be collaborating with Intella X, a Web3 arm of gaming giant Neowiz, to bring better games to life.
Aptos Labs, cofounded by Shaikh and Avery Ching, has raised over $400 million from investors including A16z, Jump Crypto, Binance Labs, Dragonfly, PayPal Ventures and Franklin Templeton Investments.
Web3 is often met with skepticism, viewed as an outsider by traditional gaming enthusiasts and labeled as non-traditional or “villain’s behavior” by some gamers. To counter this, Supervillain adopted the “supervillain persona,” not negatively, but as a beacon of innovation and disruption, Supervillain’s leaders said.
Supervillain’s objective is to transform the gaming landscape through creativity, the introduction of technical innovations, and the development of engaging products and fan communities. The aim is to elevate Web3 gaming from a fringe element to a major competitor within the traditional gaming industry, gaining acceptance from billions of gamers worldwide.
Supervillain Labs has 20 people, while Palo Alto, California-based Aptos Labs has 140 people.
