Responding to player feedback, Blizzard has announced the return of 6v6 matches in Overwatch 2 for testing purposes. Two test scenarios are planned for season 14 starting on December 10.
In the first test, players will experience a new Open Queue format, allowing character changes on the fly while enforcing role limits of three per team. The second test in the middle of the season will revert to the 2-2-2 composition, integrating Overwatch 2 changes such as reduced crowd control.
The developers aim to explore different implementation methods to address previous problems while gauging player interest in larger team sizes. The results will shape the future direction of Overwatch 2.
The shift from 6v6 to 5v5 in Overwatch 2 encountered mixed reactions, impacting gameplay dynamics and hero balance. The upcoming tests will help determine the optimal team size for a more balanced and enjoyable experience.
Looking ahead, the developers are open to the idea of both 5v5 and 6v6 modes coexisting in Overwatch 2, acknowledging the diversity of player preferences and the need for multiple gameplay options.
