Perplexity, an AI-focused search startup, has just launched its native Mac app in a move to compete with other AI apps like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Quora’s Poe app, which aggregates different large language models. The app is now available for download on Perplexity’s website.
Earlier this month, Perplexity teased the release of the app, inviting users to pre-order and receive a notification upon availability.
The Mac app is offered for free, but users can opt for the Perplexity Pro subscription for $20 per month or $200 annually. This subscription grants access to more than 300 Pro searches, which provide deeper and more detailed search results compared to the free quick search tier.
With the Mac version, users can easily initiate a Perplexity search using keyboard shortcuts. Additionally, features like voice mode, file upload, and voice dictation mode can also be accessed through shortcuts. The incorporation of voice functionality caters to users who prefer audio interactions over typing.
Furthermore, the new app allows users to ask follow-up questions and review conversation history through the sidebar. Perplexity had previously launched its iOS and Android apps last year.
In recent news, The Wall Street Journal reported that Perplexity is in talks to raise $500 million in funding, aiming to double its current valuation to $8 billion. Earlier this month, The New York Times issued a cease-and-desist letter to the company, accusing them of scraping and plagiarism.
