Whether you’re a Tesla fan or not, it’s hard to deny the cool features that Tesla cars offer. One of the standout features is the ability to use your iPhone as a car key to unlock your doors. While this feature has been around for some time, there has been a lack of an official Apple Watch app (though third-party solutions have filled the gap effectively).
According to MacRumors, this might be changing soon. The Tesla iPhone app recently received an update for iOS 18, and within the code, references were found hinting at an upcoming Apple Watch version of the app. It appears that the Apple Watch could potentially serve as a digital key to unlock your Tesla, if compatible.
However, despite the presence of code for the app, there has been no official confirmation of a release date. It is speculated that the upcoming app may not be compatible with Tesla Model S (2012-2020) or Model X (2015-2020) due to the requirement of an internet connection for remote start in these models.
Apple introduced digital car keys as a flagship feature in 2020, with compatibility extended to select Genesis, Kia, and BMW models. The company aims to broaden compatibility across various vehicles, though adoption by manufacturers has been limited.
While not groundbreaking, the addition of Apple Watch support in the official Tesla app represents added convenience and a noteworthy development, despite existing alternatives already being available.
