Google has introduced new privacy and security features with the release of Android 15 on Pixel devices. One of the key additions is the enhanced theft protection measures aimed at securing your data from unauthorized access by thieves. Initially, locating these settings was a bit challenging. However, as Android Authority first pointed out, that is set to change.
Previously, to access the theft protection menu on devices running Android 15, users had to navigate through several steps:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Go to Google.
3. Scroll down in All services and select Theft Protection to access the menu.
4. Turn on Theft Detection Lock and select Turn on when prompted.
Now, with an update being rolled out, the Theft protection menus are accessible through Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock. While it still requires a few taps, the new location in the Settings app makes it easier and quicker to find.
The new theft protection tools in Android 15 consist of Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock features that work together to enhance security.
- Theft Detection Lock: Automatically locks your phone if it detects theft to prevent unauthorized access.
- Offline Device Lock: Secures your phone if it remains offline for an extended period without an internet connection.
- Remote Lock: Allows you to remotely lock your device by visiting android.com/lock in case Find My Device is not accessible.
Android 15 has been initially released on supported Pixel devices like the Google Pixel 9, with other Android devices expected to receive the update soon.
Aside from theft protection, the Android update also brings new privacy and security enhancements such as “Private Space” for sensitive apps, improved password management, and optimizations for larger screens. Camera features, messaging upgrades, performance improvements, and developer tools for richer app experiences are also part of the update.
