Based on interviews with over 300 current and former employees of Blizzard, Schreier uncovered that Overwatch Mobile is currently in the development phase. The project is being led by Walter Kong, the general manager of Overwatch, who was also involved in overseeing content for Overwatch 2.
This new venture into mobile gaming by Kong signals an exciting direction for the franchise.
Official Confirmation Pending
While Blizzard has not officially confirmed the development of Overwatch Mobile, industry insiders speculate on whether the game will be a standalone mobile release or a cross-platform adaptation of the original Overwatch or its sequel.
Activision Blizzard has a history of successful mobile releases, such as Diablo Immortal with NetEase and Call of Duty: Mobile with Tencent.
Despite challenges faced with Call of Duty Warzone: Mobile, including performance issues and layoffs within the development team, Microsoft and Activision have approved the formation of a new team within Blizzard dedicated to creating smaller games based on existing IPs.
